Thinking about the last exam ....

Hi all,

Please post the essay prompts (as comments on this post) that your group came up with. My guess is that between all 31 of you, you've come up with prompts similar to those I choose. The exam will have 3-4 of these. I expect you to write a cogent response that includes references to some of the literature we've read in class. I *might* also have a few graphs that I ask you to interpret.

  1. From Nadia Garcia, Rebecca Hohsfield, and Consuela Osborne

    1. How would the 6th extinction be similar and different to the past 5 extinctions?
    2. What was the impact of body mass or size on post-extinction ecology?
    3. How might community structure affect future extinctions?

  2. 1. Compare the mass extinctions in Earth's history. How are they similar and different? What is different about the "6th mas extinction?"

    2. How has human migration affected the ecosystem over the Cenozoic? How have humans contributed to Cenozoic extinctions?

    3. How has body size affected organisms throughout Earth's "6" mass extinctions?

  3. 1. Compare and contrast the characteristics of the big 6 mass extinctions.
    2. What kinds of selectivity are being placed on organisms in the 6th mass extinction?

  4. 1) What are the "Big Five" mass extinctions and what are the characteristics of each?
    2) What were the effects on fauna due to human migration? Compare and contrast to current human effects on the biosphere?
    3) Discuss the characteristics that tend to affect an organisms chances of survival during a mass extinction?

  5. 1) Are we entering the 6th mass extinction? If so, what are the factors leading to this extinction?
2)When did the 5 mass extinctions take place? What were important factors that influenced them?
    3) How did the arrival of Homo/Hominin's affect large megafauna? How did the megafauna respond to Hominin's arrival?
    4) What are the most common kill mechanisms? How do they lead to mass extinctions?

  6. 1) What were the impacts of the end-Pleistocene extinctions and how might they still be reverberating today?

    2) Give examples of extinctions that followed the spread of hominims.

    3) Compare and contrast 2 of the 5 (6?) mass extinctions.

  7. 1) What are the mechanisms of mass extinctions and how are they different for the 6th mass extinction?

    2) How have humans impacted extinction rates?

    3) Do you think that extinctions have shifted from overall "random" to overall "selective"? Why or why not?

    4) How has the geographic range of certain animals (migration patterns) played a role in mass extinctions and how is does it impact the 6th mass extinction?

  8. 1) describe how body size impacted rates of extinction during the end pleistocene/holocene.
    2) Describe events which are thought to be mechanisms of the mass extinctions
3)Discuss the impact of hominids on rates of extinctions and changes we have made to the biosphere

    2) How do you define a mass extinction and identify possible causes?
