Field Trip 1 - Paleozoic fossils

We are going to a Paleozoic site, which is on the west side of New Mexico Route 4, directly across from the Hummingbird Music Camp. It is about 5  miles (8 km) north of Jemez Springs, Sandoval County, New Mexico. Fossils are in shales and limestones in the upper part of the Madera Limestone, Late Pennsylvanian Period (Missourian and middle Virgilian stages), dating to about 300 Ma or late Pennsylvanian in age.

Lat/Long: 35°49’32” North, 106°39’34” West, elevation 6,730 ft (2,050 m).
Meet up at parking area by the arrow (Battleship rock);
site is across from Hummingbird music camp.
Wear good walking shoes or hiking boots, and bring a backpack or bag WITH sunscreen, sunglasses, ziplock bags with index cards and sharpies for your finds, a rock hammer if you have one,and of course, water! Also a good idea to bring lunch and/or snacks since we will probably be there into the early afternoon.

Gary and Amelia will meet up students at 8:30 AM sharp on SATURDAY Oct 7th at the loading dock outside of Castetter Hall. I will meet up with you all at 10:15 at the Battleship Rock parking area about 7 miles north of Jemez Springs (see image).

Should you be driving from the north: there are two ways to get to Jemez Springs from Santa Fe, which look to be about equidistant on the map: 1) I-25 south to Bernalillo, north to San Ysidro on US 550 and then north to Jemez Springs on NM 4, or 2) US 84-285 north to Pojoaque, NM 502 west to Los Alamos and then continue west to the Valles Caldera and then south on NM 4 to Jemez Springs.

Crinoid - you'll probably find cross sections of the 'stem'

Brachipods are common here

Bivalves
Gastropods!
Fossil Forams can also be commonly found
